Just in time for Earth Day (April 22, 2008), Pinehurst Inn offers the following “green tip” used at the inn, and perfect for at-home use too: With gas prices rising, everyone is seeking ways to better manage transportation costs. If you can’t use a grease car like ours, revisit your choice of vehicle to one that gets better mileage. Then consider the following: drive smart (avoid quick stops and starts), drive less, keep your engine tuned, keep tires at appropriate inflation, carpool, or ride mass transit. Save money, minimize CO2 emissions and keep our air clean. These kinds of tips are provided regularly in the Pinehurst Inn e-newsletter and on their website.

Pinehurst Inn was recognized for its commitment to earth-friendly practices with the Environmental Stewardship Aware from the Lake Superior Binational Forum. Their practices range from driving a “grease car” that runs on used vegetable oil to the use of primarily locally grown and organic foods for their breakfasts, to a comprehensive ‘”green purchasing” program for all materials and supplies for the inn. In 2007, Pinehurst was the first inn in Wisconsin to be carbon neutral through purchase of “green tags” that offset CO2 emissions.

Sofitel Hotels Become First Hotel Chain In The U.s. To Choose Wind Power And Become EPA Green Power Partner

Accor North America announced today a new agreement between its Sofitel Hotels and wind energy supplier Community Energy, Inc. to purchase clean, renewable, wind energy for all nine Sofitel locations in the U.S. This purchase of wind-generated power in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) qualifies Sofitel Hotels as an EPA Green Power Partner, making them the first hotel chain to choose green power for each of the brand’s hotel locations in the country.

“We’re proud to step up as a leader in our industry and to do our part for the environment. Our customers recognize and value the commitment we’ve made to a safe and secure energy future. We hope others will follow our lead and make the choice as well,” said Robert Moore, senior vice president of Technical Services for Accor North America.

Sofitel has nine locations throughout the United States including two in Chicago and one in Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington D.C. These properties will buy a total of 1,527,000 kilowatt hours (kWhs) of renewable energy. Compared to the average generation mix in the regional electric grid, the environmental benefit from this purchase is equal to offsetting approximately two million pounds of carbon dioxide per year, the impact of which is equivalent to planting more than 800 acres of trees each year or not driving 2.36 million miles. This level of commitment makes Sofitel the first hotel chain to become an EPA Green Power Partner.

"EPA applauds our corporate partners for protecting our environment by purchasing green power," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "By voluntarily shifting to renewable energy, Accor North America is proving you don’t need to wait for a signal in order to go green."

Community Energy President Brent Alderfer stated, “Sofitel has stepped up as a leader in the hospitality industry. Their renewable energy purchase puts their energy dollars to work to benefit the environment and the nation. As more customers choose to follow their lead and purchase renewable energy, we can bring more clean power resources online to meet that demand.”

Sofitel has also led the industry in efforts to reduce water and energy usage such as the use of ozone laundry systems in its properties. Last September, Sofitel San Francisco Bay was honored nationally by the WateReuse Association as the 2007 Customer of the Year for becoming the first to collaborate with the City of Redwood City, Calif., on its Recycled Water Project.

This agreement with Community Energy signifies the commitment of Accor North America and Sofitel to energy efficiency and sustainable development. Accor North America’s annual Earth Guest program in 2007 consisted of extensive and ongoing environmental initiatives including the planting of 20,000 trees representing each Accor employee in North America, implementation of a 65-point environmental check list at all properties and at the corporate headquarters, and donation of $375,000 to educational and charitable groups. Earth Guest program activities are led and put into action at the corporate level and in local communities by Accor North America’s four brands and over 950 properties – Sofitel, Novotel, Studio 6 and Motel 6 in the U.S. and Canada.

What is Wind Energy?
Wind Energy is a clean source of electricity produced when specially designed wind turbines capture the wind to generate electricity. Like historical windmills, modern wind turbines generate power from the wind. New wind turbines are the fastest growing and one of the most cost-effective renewable energy technologies in the world, and are producing power all across the United States.

What are the Benefits of Wind Energy?

Among other benefits, Wind Energy is clean and helps reduce air pollution; combats climate change; diversifies energy supply; creates jobs and regional growth and delivers clean power on a large scale.

How can I Purchase Wind Energy for my Home or Business?
Community Energy works with a number of different utility companies throughout the country offering clean, renewable energy products that can be purchased as an additional item on your electricity bill. If Community Energy does not have a partnership with your utility, you can still support wind energy through the purchase of wind Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). These third-party certified RECs ensure that each month, clean wind energy is being generated and delivered to the power grid on your behalf, helping to make the mix of electricity in the power grid cleaner.

How Will the Wind Energy get to My Home or Business?
Your purchase ensures that wind energy is generated and placed onto the power grid on your behalf. You can think of the power grid like a giant bathtub being filled with electricity from many different faucets - like nuclear, coal or wind. Every time you turn on a light switch, you drain a little electricity from the tub. By buying wind energy from Community Energy you are increasing the amount of pollution-free wind generated electricity, or pouring clean water into the tub, and decreasing the need for energy generation from other non-renewable polluting sources. Wind energy is guaranteed to be placed on the grid in an amount equal to your purchase size, thereby matching your power consumption with clean, renewable wind energy generation.

‘GREEN PASSPORT’ CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED AT ITB 2008

Green travel tips for the world's growing number of international tourists were launched today by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). The internet-based campaign, "Green Passport", aims to raise tourists' awareness of their potential to contribute to sustainable development by making responsible holiday choices.

Achim Steiner, UN-Under Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director, said "Tourism, the world's biggest industry, is booming. By 2020, the number of international arrivals by air and by sea could reach 1.6 billion annually. This growth brings the prospect of income and economic development to countless tourist destinations in rich and poor countries alike. The challenge is to manage this growth sustainably. Governments have a key role to play, but so too do individuals and families when planning and going on holiday," he said.

"Many consumers are now making green domestic choices from sourcing electricity from renewable sources and choosing eco-friendly investments up to buying leaner and greener cars. Packing a Green Passport along with airline tickets, the swimming costume and the sun lotion means tourists no longer need to leave their green credentials at home but can make them part of the holiday of a life-time," added Mr Steiner.

Stefanos Fotiou, head of UNEP's tourism unit, said: "By browsing the Green Passport web site consumers will be able to find practical tips to help them reduce their environmental and social footprint while they are on vacations. Tourists will discover that traveling green is not as hard as they imagined.”

In 2007, international tourist arrivals reached nearly 900 million and by the end of the decade this number is expected to reach more than one billion. As tourist numbers grow, so will their demand for energy, water, and natural resources to support their holidays.

"There are some encouraging signs in terms of market response to the problem. Tourists are increasingly expressing concern about the quality of the environment at their holiday destinations," said Fotiou. "However, there is clearly a gap to fill in order to shift from discussions on responsible holidays to concrete actions."

The new UNEP campaign will provide information to tourists to help them prevent some of their impacts by avoiding certain behaviors that greatly affect the environment and the society. The green travel tips are addressing all the holiday's cycle, from travel planning and packaging to the way back home. For example, the campaign encourages tourists to:

- Choose responsible service providers
- Reduce the consumption of energy while on the road or in their hotel
- Buy locally made and environmentally friendly souvenirs

The Campaign has been launched by UNEP, jointly with and the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning and the Brazilian Ministries of Environment and Tourism. It is an initiative of the International Task Force on Sustainable Tourism Development, firmly rooted in the move to accelerate a global shift towards sustainable consumption and production (SCP) that emerged from the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), held in Johannesburg in 2002.

The Green Passport web site is one outcome of this process. The web site, developed in English, Portuguese and French, together with additional communication tools (website and leaflet/brochure), is now available for dissemination by new partners to raise awareness in the tourism community. Financial Institutions Interested in Mainstreaming Sustainability in Tourism Sector

By Catalina Etcheverry

The recent meeting of the Marrakech Process Task Force on Sustainable Tourism Development (ITF-STD) focused on sustainable investment and financing in the tourism sector and attracted the interest of financial institutes aiming at mainstreaming sustainability principles into tourism investments and projects.

The meeting recommended the establishment of a network comprising financial stakeholders, private investors, international organizations and developing destinations that will focus on the mainstreaming of sustainable principles on investments and development projects in the tourism sector. The network will be called SIFT Network (Sustainable Investment and Financing in Tourism). Beside the Task Force members, the World Bank, the GEF, the IFC, the UN Foundation, the US Overseas Private Investment Corporation, commercial banks and Private Equity corporations have agreed to participate in the network in order to build ties with destinations in developing countries and develop guidelines for sustainable investments in the tourism sector.

The network will:
• Create a network on Sustainable Investment and Financing in Tourism with the participation of multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors, financing institutions, the private sector (banks, tourism companies, and investors), developing countries and international organizations.
• Provide guidance to financing institutes, private investors and public authorities at national and local levels in constructing the appropriate policy frameworks to complement and stimulate the channeling of financial resources necessary for sustainable tourism development.

The meeting proved that the Task Force has started to deliver concrete outputs towards the development of sustainable consumption and production patterns in the tourism value chain.

These outputs are related with the projects financed by the French Ministry (communication campaign, guidelines for tourism in coastal zones, training material for hospitality schools) but have also contributed to projects that started within the Task Force’s program of work and implemented by various partners, such as:
• an international initiative on the establishment of baseline criteria for sustainable tourism
• compilation of good practices
• destination management projects jointly implemented by tour operators and NGOs

The meeting also stressed that the activities towards adaptation and mitigation measures to combat climate change in the tourism sector should be strengthened.

Finally, the development of policy and business guidelines was recognized as one of the most visible and valuable activities of the Task Force. In this respect, the following activities should be further encouraged:
• The compilation of a global baseline of sustainable tourism criteria;
• Work on the integration of sustainable tourism in governance and local development approaches;
• The compilation of good practices and the need to focus on the development of specific recommendations. In this respect the following recommendation was provided:
• The development of collaborative pilot projects engaging task force members, which directly support the implementation of sustainable tourism development on the ground.

Mr. Carlos Benavides, Minister for Tourism in Costa Rica, announced that the next ITF-STD Meeting on Sustainable Development will be held in Costa Rica. This Fourth meeting will take place in June 2008.

The Third International Task Force Meeting on Sustainable Tourism Development (ITF-STD) was held on 10-12 December, 2007, in Paris, France. The meeting was organized by the French Ministry for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning; the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the French Ministry of Tourism and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) with the support of the Norwegian Government. Approximately 86 participants attended the meeting, including 12 country members, 9 international organizations, 9 federal associations together with NGOs, and 18 participating experts.
